The totals
Enter the quote's subtotal to see the tax, the total and the balance.
How it works
- Tax is the subtotal times the tax rate, rounded to the nearest cent. The total is the subtotal plus the tax.
- A percentage deposit is taken from the total, including the tax, and rounded to the cent. A fixed deposit can't be more than the total.
- The balance due is the total less the deposit.
- Whether and how you charge sales tax depends on where you work and what you sell. Enter the rate that applies to you, or zero if none does.
Tips
- Put the deposit and the balance on the quote itself, so the customer agrees to both when they accept.
- If your price list is before tax, show the tax as its own line so the customer can see it.
- Check what your state allows for deposits before you set one.
Or let QuoteDash do the sums
QuoteDash works out the tax, the total, the deposit and the balance on every quote and invoice for you, and credits the deposit when the customer pays the rest.

Questions
- Do I charge tax on labor?
- It depends on your state and the kind of work. This calculator only does the sum: enter the rate that applies, or ask your accountant or tax office what does.
- Is the deposit taken from the total with tax?
- Here it is: a percentage deposit is a share of the total including tax. If you work it differently, use a fixed amount.
- How is the tax rounded?
- To the nearest cent, from the subtotal, the same way QuoteDash works out the tax on a quote.
