How much flooring

Enter a room's length and width to see how much flooring you need.

How it works

  • The floor area of each room is its length times its width, and the rooms are added together.
  • A waste allowance is added on top for cuts, trimming and mistakes. Change it to suit the layout and the flooring.
  • If you enter what one box covers, the calculator rounds up to whole boxes and shows how much is left over.
  • Each room is a rectangle. For an odd shape, split it into rectangles and add each one as its own room.

Tips

  • Read what a box covers off the box or the supplier's sheet: it varies by product.
  • A diagonal layout, a pattern or a lot of corners usually needs a bigger waste allowance than a plain straight run.
  • Buy all the boxes at once, so the product comes from the same batch.
  • Keep a box or part of one after the job in case a board needs replacing later.

Questions

How much extra flooring should I buy?
It depends on the layout and the product. The calculator starts with a common allowance for you to change, and a pattern or diagonal layout usually needs more.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, add each as its own room, and the calculator adds them together.
Does it work for tile and carpet?
It works out area and whole boxes, so it suits tile, planks and anything sold by the box. Carpet is sold by the roll width, so check that against the roll.
Does it include the cost?
No, it works out how much to buy. To price the job with your own rates, use the quote tools in QuoteDash.
